Early Signs of Dementia

Many people are concerned that they show signs of dementia as they age. While forgetfulness is something that everyone experiences at one time or another, knowing the common early signs of dementia can help set your mind at ease. Alternatively, knowing the signs can also provide the reassurance needed to get further treatment if necessary.

Short-term memory loss

Not being able to remember what you ate for breakfast but being able to offer a blow-by-blow account of an event that happened in your youth is often an early sign of dementia. Being unable to find a particular item or recall why you entered a room are other subtle signs.

Mood Changes

Mood changes can often be difficult to self-diagnose, it's often easier to point them out in other people. Depression can be a common occurrence as one ages and could indicate that dementia is at play. Personality changes, such as someone who was once shy suddenly becoming outgoing, is another sign of early dementia.

Interest Wanes

If you find yourself becoming less interested in activities and hobbies that you used to love, it could be an early sign of dementia. Dementia could also be the reason that an aging loved one no longer wants to visit family and friends.

Repetitive Actions

Behavioral changes brought on by dementia can include repeating routine daily tasks such as shaving or brushing their hair. They might also begin to collect certain items in a manner that seems obsessive. A classic sign of early dementia is when a person repeats a question in conversation even after it has been answered, multiple times.
